Although my main focus on these pages is my art photography I’m also a massive foodie and a big fan of the Brighton and Hove food scene, so I’ve decided to share with you the phenomenon that is OctoberBEST.

Throughout October loads of our local restaurants offer fabulous menus at fabulous prices. Many will offer a 2 or 3-course meal for just £20. Lucky us! One such deal is at the wonderful Riddle & Finns on Brighton Beach and this was what the menu we chose consisted of:

Carpaccio of monkfish tail – Spicy Thai dressing, redcurrants, coriander
*. *. *
Tempura monkfish cheeks – Jalapeño dipping sauce
*. *. *
Pan-roasted monkfish on the bone – New potatoes, spiced mussel and monkfish velouté, crispy mussel

Monkfish Carpaccio
Pan-roasted Monkfish

Overkill on monkfish I hear you say? Nope! This was an exquisite head to tail set of dishes with a rich variety of flavours. The carpaccio was as fresh as the sea itself, delicate yet satisfying with a perfect balance of spices. The toasted almonds sprinkled on top were a delightful addition.

The tempura cheeks were as light as a feather and the sauce totally delicious with real zing. We were all so busy dipping and gobbling it up we forgot to take any pictures of this dish!

The finale – the pan roasted monkfish, was perfectly cooked, tender, firm and juicy; the new potatoes had been formed into a crispy layer beneath, with some lightly coated spicy mussels on top. The velouté was to die for. The chefs at Riddle & Finns really know what they’re doing, I honestly couldn’t fault any of these dishes and I highly recommend heading over to asap. For the special offers available this month you’ll need to go to: where a ton of other wonderful Brighton restaurants have created some superb menus to tempt you.

This evening I’ll be trying out the OctoberBEST menu with some friends at the delightful restaurant Chard in Hove. I ate there with my husband in the summer and we were blown away by the quality of the food and the lovely staff. The venue itself is gorgeous and quite quirky as it sits within the very chic shop iGigi. I can’t wait!

Happy eating everyone. Nicole x
